Phases, reflects the ongoing dialogue with the natural world in Hyo’spractice. Drawing reference from her heritage, this piece is inspired by the traditional Korean Moon Jars of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897).The traditional Moon Jar is made up of plain white porcelain and revered for its portrayal of purity. In her iteration of the jar, Hyo interrupts the white surface with a deep black glaze, depicting the hidden side of the moon and its mystery. As the viewers perspective shifts, so does the silhouette, mirroring the moons phases. Illustrating the moons waxing and waning cycle, the far also refers to cyclical passage of nature.
